What Kind of Magic is Ronaldinho Doing!

Ronaldo de Assis Moreira (born March 21, 1980 in Porto Alegre, Brazil) is a footballer more commonly known as Ronaldinho Gaúcho due to his citizenship in the Rio Grande do Sul region of Brazil. His name Ronaldinho, Portuguese for "little Ronaldo", was originally devised as a means of distinguishing between himself, and fellow Brazilian footballer Ronaldo. Among his many achievements and accolades, Ronaldinho has been awarded the FIFA World Player of the Year award twice as well as both the European Footballer of the Year award and the FIFPro World Player of the Year award once. He is widely regarded as the best player in the world, although he himself considers such talk ridiculous, having told FourFourTwo magazine, "I don't even feel I'm the best at Barça." - Wikipedia

Peer2Web

One of the best uses of the Internet is the ability to download copyrighted stuff - sorry DMCA, but that's the truth. Can you imagine the Internet without being able to download Movies, MP3s, Softwaes , etc. I don't think so.
There are currently many ways to download such stuff, one of the most popular means it P2P where each one can share some files from his own Disk. People simply download some softwares like Kazaa, Shareaza, BitTorrent, etc and they can then download files from others, and for sure upload files to them as well. The problem with P2P is availability, the point is you can find a file with someone, but these are zillions of people downloading the file from him. So you have to be put in a queue since that user has limited resources and cannot just send it to everyone at the same time. You may wait for ages in the queue, and this user may go offline just before you finish downloading the file you want.
One other method of sharing stuff is by uploading them to sites like RapidShare, YouSendIt, you name them. And people can go there and download the files. The problem with such sites, that you cannot simply search there to find the file you want. What happens there is the the file uploader send a link to his file there to some Web Forum or Mailing List, which are normally limited to few users only.
So, where there is no Hybrid-Solution that can have the pros. of each of the above mothods. Imagine a method having the Searching capabilities of P2P, and the reliable resources of Web Servers. What I am thinking of is a P2P that shares URLs instead of files. So people just upload their files to RapidShare, and then post the URL to a P2P network, this may be an ordinary P2P like Gnutella or Fast Track, or some new P2P networkd with its own programs that are optimized to URL sharing. Users can also tag files with some tags like "Unavailable", "Fake", "High Quality", "Low Quality", etc. They can even tag it with it's genre, artists names, etc. just to improve the searching there. Also users are not supposed to be limited to RapidShare, et al. but they can use their own FTP servers or anything equivalent. However using Free file sharing servers keep them away from piracy laws.
Finally, this article is for educational reasons only, and I really ask you not to break your country's laws. Actually I think this solution must be used to share non copyrighted stuff only, as you can buy copyrighted CD from stores.

FHM's 'Sexiest Women' Poll

"Scarlett Johansson" was picked as this year's FHM magazine's number one in the 100 Sexiest Women in the World poll. "Angelina Jolie" is No. 2 on the list, followed by "Jessica Alba" - Alba is No. 1 according AskMen, the rest are as follows, "Jessica Simpson", "Keira Knightley" - Who's she!?, "Halle Berry" - Dun like her, "Jenny McCarthy" - Who is she too!?, "Maria Sharapova" - Ok, not bad. Actually, if I was to re-arrange these names, then I think I'll put Alba first, then Scarlett, and may be Angelina and Simpson after them. Also we can't ignore Hayfa Wahby, and Myriam Faris for example ;) Tags: , , , , , , , , , , ,

Google Deleted Its Own Blog

A student from Texas left internet giant Google with egg on its face by taking control of the company's official blog when it went offline yesterday. The unnamed student tried registering a new blog with the Google-owned Blogger service using the same googleblog name after the search firm's usual page failed to load. "The username was giving a 404, so I tried registering a new blog with it. Surprisingly, it worked.", said the student Google later admitted that it had accidentally deleted the blog and that there was no widespread hacking problem for Blogger. Source: Vnunet Tags: , ,

IETF: Not a Teenager Anymore

This year, the IETF celebrates another one when it turns 20. The IETF is an egalitarian, all-volunteer group consisting of network engineers from Cisco, IBM, Microsoft, AT&T and other leading vendors. It has created many of the underlying standards that make the Internet work, including fundamental routing, e-mail, directory services and telephony protocols. IETF leaders say the group's greatest accomplishment is that the protocols it developed let the Internet function in spite of dramatic growth and the introduction of new services. Linux Console

This is how to configure the serial port in Linux to act as a Console port. You may need it if you have multiple PC's and you don't want to get a seperate Keyboard, and Mouse for each of them and also you don't have money to buy a KVM.
  1. In the file “/etc/inittab” add the following line:
    • S0:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty –L –f /etc/issueserial 9600 ttyS0 vt100
      • Issueserial: this is the file where you write your custom greeting message
      • 9600: Baud rate
      • ttyS0: COM-1, you may use ttyS1 for COM-2
  2. Then type the following command to activate the new settings “init q"
  3. In order to allow users to connect as root add the following to “/etc/securetty” ttyS0, or ttyS1
  4. [Optional] To redirect the console output to your serial port add the following to “/etc/grub.conf” Kernel /vmlinuz-2.4.20-18.9 ro root=LABEL=/ console=ttyS1,9600, The console redirection may cause some issues with kudzu so you need to disable it:chkconfig kudzu off

Yesterday I received an email telling me that my address was added to a group called IslamCity on Yahoo Groups. And just after that my Inbox was bombarded with zillions of mails from these group. Thanks Allah, I am unsubscribed from it now, but I still can't get the point of adding people to a mailing list without their permition :-( Tags: , ,

Today, the 21th of March is Mother's Day here in Egypt. AFAIK, the Americans celebrate it on the 2nd Sunday of May, and my be some other countries have different dates for it too. Dutch Public TV Channels are going to use Bittorrent

The Dutch pubic TV broadcasting channels (omroep.nl) are going share TV shows using Bittorrent. The deal was announced earlier today on a workshop on P2P TV. They are going to experiment with the new “social” bittorrent client called Tribler. Johan Pauwelse, one of Triblers developers said that IPTV should move away from the old fashioned way of distributing files and embrace Bittorrent. William Valkenburg manager of omroep.nl said that the “social” aspect of tribler was essential for the deal. Tribler allows people to maintain buddy lists, and recommend files to friends. Tribler also gives recommendation based on your personal downloading history. Source: Torrent Freak Tags: , ,

Norton Update Kicks AOL Users Offline

An incorrect update to Symantec's Norton security software on Wednesday blocked Internet access for some America Online users. The issue affected AOL customers using recent editions of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, Symantec said in a statement sent via e-mail on Thursday. The culprit was an update to intrusion prevention software that is part of the security software, the company said. "This update incorrectly detected traffic patterns used as part of the AOL connection as a potential risk," Symantec said in the statement. AOL has about 20 million Internet service subscribers. As a result of the incorrect update, AOL dial-up customers lost their connection and AOL broadband users were unable to access AOL servers, Symantec said. The erroneous update was removed from Symantec's servers about seven hours after it was released, and a corrected version was posted, the company said. The Norton problem is the second high-profile problem with security software within a week. Last Friday an error in McAfee's virus definition file caused the company's consumer and enterprise antivirus products to flag Microsoft's Excel, as well as other applications on users' PCs, as a virus called W95/CTX. Orkut Once More

Earlier in that post I've told you about Orkut, the social network made by Google guys. A social network is an online community that connects people through a network of trusted friends, i.e. each person has his profile there, then he invites some others to be his/her friends, each one then can view the other ones friends and even send messages and connect himself/herself to them. After getting an invitation to Orkut and trying it for a while, here you are my comments on it and some basic comparison between it an Hi5 the most popular social networking service here in the Middle East. I myself prefer hi5 to Orkut, may be the user interface organization is better, and it may also be the users in hi5 are much real, compared to the horny freaks on Orkut. Orkut my on the other hand excels in the Communities, which is some kind of a group of people with similar interests. Hi5 has some Ads here and there, while Orkut doesn't have any, which makes me wonder how do these guys get money from it. Do they sell people's info to some other third parties, or what!? Finally, Orkut may be as good as hi5 technically or even better, but its main problem is the quality/quantity of its users. However this may be due to that it is still in beta version. Kismet/Netstumbler Wireless Scanners

Kismet is an 802.11b network sniffer and network dissector. It is capable of sniffing using most wireless cards, automatic network IP block detection via UDP, ARP, and DHCP packets, Cisco equipment lists via Cisco Discovery Protocol, weak cryptographic packet logging, and Ethereal and tcpdump compatible packet dump files. It also includes the ability to plot detected networks and estimated network ranges on downloaded maps or user supplied image files. Windows support is currently preliminary, so those users may want to look at Netstumbler if they run into trouble. URL: http://www.kismetwireless.net/ Netstumbler is the best known Windows tool for finding open wireless access points ("wardriving"). They also distribute a WinCE version for PDAs and such called Ministumbler. The tool is currently free but Windows-only and no source code is provided. They note that "the author reserves the right to change this license agreement as he sees fit, without notice." UNIX users (and advanced Win users) may want to look at Kismet instead. HPing, Packet Forger

hping is a command-line oriented TCP/IP packet assembler/analyzer. The interface is inspired to the ping(8) unix command, but hping isn't only able to send ICMP echo requests. It supports TCP, UDP, ICMP and RAW-IP protocols, has a traceroute mode, the ability to send files between a covered channel, and many other features. URL: http://www.hping.org/index.html Tags: , ,

NGrep, Network Grep

ngrep strives to provide most of GNU grep's common features, applying them to the network layer. ngrep is a pcap-aware tool that will allow you to specify extended regular or hexadecimal expressions to match against data payloads of packets. It currently recognizes TCP, UDP, ICMP, IGMP and Raw protocols across Ethernet, PPP, SLIP, FDDI, Token Ring, 802.11 and null interfaces, and understands bpf filter logic in the same fashion as more common packet sniffing tools, such as tcpdump and snoop. NBTScan. NetBIOS Name Network Scanner

NBTscan is a program for scanning IP networks for NetBIOS name information. It sends NetBIOS status query to each address in supplied range and lists received information in human readable form. For each responded host it lists IP address, NetBIOS computer name, logged-in user name and MAC address. URL: http://www.inetcat.org/software/nbtscan.html Tags: , ,

Ethereal, Open Source Network Sniffer

Ethereal is a free network protocol analyzer for Unix and Windows. It allows you to examine data from a live network or from a capture file on disk. You can interactively browse the capture data, viewing summary and detail information for each packet.

Ethereal has several powerful features, including a rich display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session. A text-based version called tethereal is included.

Nmap Security Scanner

Nmap ("Network Mapper") is a free open source utility for network exploration or security auditing. It was designed to rapidly scan large networks, although it works fine against single hosts. Nmap uses raw IP packets in novel ways to determine what hosts are available on the network, what services (application name and version) those hosts are offering, what operating systems (and OS versions) they are running, what type of packet filters/firewalls are in use, and dozens of other characteristics. Nmap runs on most types of computers and both console and graphical versions are available. URL: http://www.insecure.org/nmap/ Tags: , ,

Ritzy Mabrouk a.k.a Miss Mabrouk of Egypt is back, she had stopped blogging earlier for an unknown reason. Any way, welcome back MB.
"The plugg was pulled, literally. It was an abrupt termination of what had been nearly six months of full-time blogging. I am sorry I did not have a chance to say good bye. My only comfort during this time has been the nature of the net, where someone leaves, others usually continue. I haven´t been able to check my mail or the comments. I haven´t seen any other blogs. I´ve been off the net. Didn´t think that would happen to me. Didn´t think it was possible that could happen to anyone. But I survived", Miss Mabrouk of Egypt.

Open Source Routers

I don't think many people have heared about that Open Source Router Software called GNU Zebra.
"Zebra is a routing software package that provides TCP/IP based routing services with routing protocols support such as RIP, OSPF and BGP. Zebra also supports special BGP Route Reflector and Route Server behavior. In addition to traditional IPv4 routing protocols, Zebra also supports IPv6 routing protocols. With SNMP daemon which supports SMUX protocol, Zebra provides routing protocol management information bases", Wikipedia
But it seems that Open Source routers are on their way once more. According to NetworkWorld, an emerging company called Vyatta will offers a free, open source WAN router software image and announced the first beta version of the software at the end of February.
"The company says it will eventually give large and midsize enterprises a way to deploy routed WANs at as much as 90% the cost of a Cisco- or Juniper-based network", NetworkWorld
But the point is that the can offer the Open Source Software, but what about the Hardware? What about the Routing Engines, the various Interfaces, etc.? Also can an ordinary PC with Intel Based PC with running Linux handle the traffic load of an ISP? Tags: , ,

Template Update

First of all, don't you think that the current dark template is really lame? Also the layout is not that good and not utilizing the whole page space. That's why I wanna use a newer template for my blog. The point is that I am too lazy to migrate, as there are many things to be moved there too, like the recent-comments-bar, blogroll-list, counters, etc. Anyway, hope to get your comments on the current blog-template, and if I you now any better ones to use. Egyptian Python Intro.

I've started to learn python some time ago - actually it is too simple to be learnt - as I wanted to know some dynamic - scripting - language beside C. So it will be nice to give an intro to python if there are people interested in it. Actually I don't have presentations prepared now, but I think I can manage to prepare one if needed. You can leave your comments here, or there. EGLUG: http://www.eglug.org/node/1918 Tags: , ,

A Plan for Ham

Paul Graham has published an article about fighting spam in August 2002. In his article "A Plan for Spam", he used to differentiate between Spam and Ham - nonSpam - using a statistical approach.
"I think we will be able to solve the problem with fairly simple algorithms. In fact, I've found that you can filter present-day spam acceptably well using nothing more than a Bayesian combination of the spam probabilities of individual words. Using a slightly tweaked Bayesian filter, we now miss less than 5 per 1000 spams, with 0 false positives", Paul Graham
The point is that do I really need all these mathematical calculations in order to decide whether that email is Spam or not? Most of the time I can tell if an email is spam using the sender's email address. I know that email addresses can be forged using open SMTP relays etc. So what I am thinking of is that we can use the PKI (Public Key Infrastructure) combined with the Email Servers in order to differentiate between Spam anb Ham. Organizations as well as ordinary users are supposed to get a Digitical Certificate stating that they are not spammers. These certificates can be obtained from the current CAs (Certificate Authorities) such as VeriSign, Thawte, etc or new entities can be formed for such purpose. These CAs has to be supervise by some organization to decide if they really give Digitat Certificate to non spammers only or not. Users shall sign their Emails with their own Private Keys and Mail Servers are supposed to accept mails that are signed only. Tags: , , , , ,

Shall I Buy a Stamp to Send an Email!?

"AOL and Yahoo had unveiled the plan as part of their partnership with Goodmail. The companies proposed the creation of a type of electronic postage stamp that could be bought for around one cent. Purchasing the stamp would allow marketers to avoid spam filters and have guaranteed delivery to AOL and Yahoo subscribers", News Factor Spam is in Emails, an not in ordinary mails, as Email are send without any fees, while you need to buy a stamp in order to send a mail. And that's why Yahoo et al are planning to force marketers to buy their e-stamp in order to send Emails as a plan reduce spam. They also will get zillions of Dollars from such move! But this plan will stop small spam senders, but on the other hand will help those spammers who will pay for the stamp to pass any spam-filters and enter users inboxes freely. I am really worried if this mave may evolve to charge ordinary users as well in the future! Tags: , ,

Jessica Alba Demands Playboy Pull Issue

Film star Jessica Alba demanded that Playboy magazine pull its March issue, saying on Thursday that its editors made her an unwitting cover girl and misled readers into thinking they could see her nude inside. Lawyers for Alba sent Playboy a letter threatening to sue if it did not remove the issue -- which features a publicity photo of the bikini-clad actress on the front -- from the stands and pay for damages to her reputation and career. "Playboy has violated my personal rights and blatantly misled the public, who might think I had given them permission to put me on their cover when I didn't," Alba, 24, said in a statement. A Playboy spokeswoman said Alba was placed on the cover after being chosen "sexiest star of the year" by its readers. She was included inside the magazine in an article on the top 25 sexiest celebrities as chosen in an online poll Source: Yahoo Movies Tags: , ,

Here I Am at Thy Service O Muhammad!

As a response to the Danish cartoons, many different projects have emerged. Such as Amr Khaled's Message to the World regarding the Danish Cartoons, as well as another project called "Lights Of The Prophet".
"One of the best ways to respond to the words and drawings of Evil is for Muslim men, women, and children to sit down and draw and write and publish about the deeds, miracles, and lights of Prophet Muhammad, PBUH&HF", Lights of The Prophet "True we cannot draw the face of the Prophet, PBUH&HF, but you can represent his blessed face with a depiction of holy light. Also, you can draw his deeds and miracles rather than his holy figure", Lights of The Prophet
But let me ask one silly question, Why is it really Haram - religiously forbidden - to draw His holy figure? Since there are many old books describing how He looked like, wouldn't it be better to draw Him, instead of waiting for some wicked cartoonists to draw Him for us? Imagine that Arabs knew drawing 1500 years ago, I think they would have liked to draw Him, but the problem is that Arabs didn't know most of the arts of today including drawing at that time. Finally, I think that projects like those ones are a good move and shall be encouraged, as they represent a more civilized response than boycotting Danish products and burning some flags. Tags: , ,

"The chaos that has overtaken Iraq is now threatening hopes among the US and its allies that they might be able to start significant troop withdrawals in the coming months", BBC News Thank you Zarkawi, for keeping the occupation forces stay more, and more!! Digg, Digg, Digg Your Blog!

"Digg is a technology news website that combines social bookmarking, blogging, RSS, and non-hierarchical editorial control. Google Sabbath

Six days a week, Shari Thurow spends copious amounts of time conducting searches on Google. But each Saturday, she makes a point of observing a "Google-free day." The rules are simple: Use any search engine except for Google. In practice, however, the policy is surprisingly difficult to implement. "What happens is you get stuck in a rut," said Thurow, search-engine marketing director for Grantastic Designs. "You have to expose yourself. Google's not the only search engine out there." Source: Wired News I think it worth a try, but what other search engine shall I use then? I think it'll be Yahoo, as you may have noticed I am an anti-Microsoft person. Tags: , ,

CraigNotBond

An international group of lifelong James Bond fans announced the publication of a new website, www.craignotbond.com, in order to launch a boycott of the upcoming Bond film, Casino Royale.
"Take a look past the hype to find out who actor Daniel Craig really is. How can a short, blond actor with the rough face of a professional boxer and a penchant for playing killers, cranks, cads and gigolos pull off the role of a tall, dark, handsome and suave secret agent?"
So, it is not only Arabs who boycott stuff.
